Explorative Residency with Nancy Fuller
Meeting the body of the earth
We are grateful to have been joined on the land by Ceramist Nancy Fuller, to begin experiments in Clay, to get to know the body of the land, its colours, texture and consistency. Nancy has been creating wood-fired pottery for almost 20 years, working to create pieces of humble timeless beauty. Each of her works carries a sacred essence, an invitation for ritual and to embrace a quality of slowness. Using her pieces is to welcome in a different pace for daily rituals. During her time on the land Nancy began by collecting clay from the base of the mountain we all delighted in its raw colour as she worked with it through water, sieve, placing it out on a cloth to dry.
Nancy will be looking into working with wild clay to begin to shape simple pieces and explore the potential of creating a kiln on the land. Returning to the land throughout the seasons.
To touch the dry earth with the hands,
to crumble it between palms, through water,
to grind with stone
mix and fold
to lay out all over again
cracked by the light of the sun
for it to be moist all over again
to fold and press into form
To handle the texture of the land
is to get to know
each of the previous landscapes
that move through the hands
